Agilion GmbH

The story of Agilion GmbH Chemnitz (Germany) is an exciting example for passionate tech entrepreneurship “from the idea to global market and technology leadership”, accomplished by a successful exit. And: This is our story.

Agilion was founded by Andreas Werner, Sven Sieber and by another individual in 2004 in Chemnitz, Germany. It initially started with the idea to create a security robot. The company switched focus towards RTLS (real-time location system) in 2006. Agilion developed, produced and rolled out entire RTLS solutions and systems, including hardware, firmware, and software. As such, Agilion was a real pioneer in what was later called Industry 4.0.

Industrial pioneers

A first major milestone of Agilion’s development was the global market and technology leadership in segments such as public transport fleet management by 2012. Agilion again re-shifted its strategic focus towards industrial IoT in 2016. By 2017, Agilion RTLS systems operated in 22 countries and empowered factory lines of leading industrial manufacturers around the globe. Agilion had branches and representative offices in the United States, in Taiwan, China, and in the Russian Federation. In 2018, Agilion GmbH was acquired by SIEMENS AG. Since 2019, SIEMENS turned former Agilion into the SIEMENS Competence Centre for Radio Location Systems, located in Chemnitz.

Frost & Sullivan recognized SIEMENS AG with the 2018 Global Company of the Year Award, highlighting the importance of the Agilion acquisition as a crucial component of the company's strategic Industry 4.0 technology portfolio.  According to Frost & Sullivan, "by acquiring Agilion in April 2018 Siemens was bundling  innovative real-time location system  technology with its other digital enterprise offerings. This has helped Siemens enable numerous intelligent applications in large-scale smart environments, e.g. to gain insights into the optimization potential of production processes. This can give customers a whole new view of the way their business processes are performing and prompt them to implement measures to achieve enhanced operational efficiency." Read full article here.
